Oceanman Final - Benidorm 2017
The Open Water Grand Final race Oceanman - Benidorm 2017 brought success and honors for the Greek Team.
The final of the World Open Water Swimming - Oceanman series took place in Benidorm, Spain, on Sunday October 15th and Greece was represented by 22 athletes who had qualified from the competition held last July in the idyllic Oitylo bay in Mani.
The Greek swimmers who traveled to Spain with the valuable help of WayOut Adventures excelled among more than 1200 entries from 32 countries around the world. The race conditions were particularly demanding and all swimmers battled in the high waves of southern Spain.
The most notable successes were that of Nikolaos Simantiras achieving 3rd place in the 9.3km event in the Men's Elite category and that of Katerina Gionis who was also ranked 3rd in the Women's Elite category. Both won the title of Oceanman and Oceanwoman respectively as well as a monetary bonus from the Organization. Also, athlete, Marinopoulou Georgia was ranked 5th in the Elite Oceanwoman category.
However, the rest of the Greek swimmers who participated in the event also achieved success. In the Oceanman Age group category in the 9.3km Oceanman event, Harissis Tzanavaras ranked 3rd in the Master 40–49-year-old category, Elina Mantha, ranked 1st in the General category and 1st in the Master 20–29-year-old category and finally Christina Gonidis ranked 2nd in the Master 20–29-year-old age category.
In the Half-Oceanman distance of 5.5 km male and female swimmers had similar successes. More specifically, Nelly Deliadis ranked 2nd in the Master in the 20-29-year-old age category, Amaryllis Aggouridaki ranked 3rd master in the 20-29-year-old age category, Zoi Geitona ranked 2nd master in the 30-39-year-old age category, Politi Katerina ranked 1st master in the 50-59-year-old age category, Nikos Kourliouros ranked 3rd Master in the 30-39-year-old age category and finally Mike Argyris ranked 2nd Master in the 40-49-year-old age category.
All the athletes who distinguished themselves won their free participation in the following competitions of the event depending on the position they won. The first place grants three participations, the second place grants two and the third place grants one participation in all the races of the circuit in the season 2017-2018.
After the race was concluded, Oceanman announced the schedule of the competition for the 2017-2018 season and of course Greece was a part of it.
