Ski Touring & Split-boarding Techniques, Use of Equipment, Uphill & Downhill Techniques, Avalanche Safety
Backcountry Seminar is an educational program, certified by the Freeride World Tour Academy, that takes place in some of the most important mountains of Greece. Its aims are ski mountaineering and split-boarding training, as well as training in mountaineering and skiing safety issues. In recent years, more and more skiing enthusiasts are discovering the beauty of alpine skiing and split-boarding. The search for the feeling of freedom that each ascent and descent provides, on endless slopes with pure snow and the feeling of becoming one with the natural environment, is achieved through this special activity! However, this new skiing trend, away from the demarcated tracks of the ski centers, must be accompanied with the right training and information, promoting skiing & mountaineering education.
Highlights
A series of two-day ski mountaineering and splitboard seminars will take place on the slopes of Helmos. Helmos is the ideal location for education and training. Participants will thus have the opportunity to complete different training subjects, within 2 days, without having to be transported long distances.
"FWT Academy-Backcountry Seminars" focus on improving the technical training of the participants in areas such as:
- Training and practice in ski mountaineering and splitboard techniques
- Acquaintance and use of ski mountaineering & split-boarding equipment
- Climbing techniques
- Charting a route for safe movement on the mountain.
Procedures for predicting and managing avalanche hazards:
- Field and snow lee features
- Identification of dangerous areas
- Snowpack assessment
- Risk grading
- Demonstration and use of Search & Rescue devices and tools
- Search and Rescue practice (SR Management)
Theoretical Lecture (will take place, indoors, in the afternoon. Place to be determined soon)
- General description of avalanche effect
- Behavior and route planning in a snowy field
- Types & conditions of avalanche formation
- Recording of weather data (weather observations)
- Weather - environmental effects on snowpack
- 3x3 method
- Field peculiarities and natural terrain (Photo/map analysis)
Supplementary subjects
- General and specific risks in mountainous - snowy terrain (prevention and management)
- Basic orienteering
- Information, familiarity and understanding of equipment matters

Friday 13/01/2023 - 18:00 Kalavryta Briefing and equipment familiarization
Saturday 14/01/2023 - 8:30 Kalavryta Ski Center & 16:00 Afternoon theoretical session
Sunday 15/01/2023 - 8:30 a.m. Kalavryta Ski Center & 4:00 p.m. Completion of program
General
Price per person includes:
- Avalanche search and rescue equipment (transceiver, shovel, rod)
- Fees of instructors - mountain guides
- Organization and implementation of the program
- VAT 24%
Participants will have to make plans for their own transportation as well as their meals.
In addition, it will be possible to rent specialized equipment (mountaineering skis & split-boards and skins) at special prices.

- 30-40L Mountaineering backpack
- Ski Helmet
- Mountaineering skis & split-boards, Boots, Skins, Batons
- Transceiver, shovel, locator rod
- Thermos bottle, Headlamp, Sunglasses, Mask,
- Personal Pharmacy
- Waterproof Jacket and Pants
- Gloves, Hat, Socks (2 pairs)
- Fleece apparel
- Thermal underwear
- Sunblock
